Last month, I went searching for some new nursery/playroom decor items. I wanted something kind of playful, all natural, and WASHABLE. I kind of giggled to myself, because carpet + kids = disaster (at least, most of the time!). My kids will find a way to spill juice on anything other than the easily mopped up kitchen floor. I knew I needed something that could handle the washing machine and is easy to clean. Did such a rug even exist? As it turns out, yes, there is an entire company! I found this adorable round ABC rug from Lorena Canals – and we are pretty much in love :).

So what’s the buzz all about?
If you have kids like mine, and I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that you do, there are messes to be made in your house! All Lorena Canals Rugs are machine washable, and can fit into a standard washer and dryer. Um, what?! Yes, please!
Lorena Canals suggests placing the rug into the dryer for 10 minutes to clear out the wrinkles acquired during packaging and shipping. So we took the rug out of its plastic packaging, unfolded it, cuddled on it for just a minute, and took it downstairs for a first fluffing. Max & Jax helped me put it into the dryer, and we happily pulled out a warm, soft, fluffy rug ten minutes later!
Of course, within the next ten minutes of it being on the floor, our Southern-English Bulldog (Mack) laid on the rug in all of its fluffy glory, after having dug a hole in our backyard. I’m sure he was drawn in by the freshly fluffed softness, and warmth left over from the dryer. He is such a beautiful, sweet, loving dog! He is a beautiful white color with dark gray polka dots on his back – #mombrain must have deterred me from seeing the dirt all over his legs and belly once I let him inside the house.
Here he is, when he’s actually clean – and not digging holes…
So, our beautiful rug was suddenly dirty. It hadn’t even been one hour!
Dirt. All. Over. My. Brand. New. Natural. Fluffy. Rug.
Some scolding for the naughty Mr. Mack, followed by our rug’s first washing! I held my breath, but I followed the directions that were included.
Cold water, no bleach, gentle cycle, tumble dry low. The washing directions came on a very pretty, stiff brown cutout sign with very clear directions on fluffing your rug in the dryer for the first time after shipping, and detailed washing instructions. The directions were simple and easy to follow, but included information on the important details you need to know to care for your rug so it will last and last. It was no trouble at all fitting the rug into our wash or dryer (as you can probably tell, it’s a smaller sized one anyways, but all of their rugs are designed to comfortably fit into your washer!). The sign cutely suggested that we hang it up next to our washer to remind ourselves how to properly wash and dry our natural ABC rug.
Once it was washed, we promptly followed our instructions on dryer settings, and patiently waited. I will say it did take a few cycles on our dryer to completely dry, but my dryer is a bit older. Our rug was wonderfully clean, warm, and fluffy again! This time, I kept both of our pups away so we could enjoy some reading time on our new floor covering (for longer than ten minutes!)
I absolutely love that I can put it into the washing machine. This was a huge reason I chose to go with Lorena Canals! As a mom, I can almost always expect my kids to make a mess. I have fully embraced my life as a mother of boys. Max & Jax are two amazing little men, who love to explore, and get their hands dirty. They touch the earth, splash in puddles, dig up lost treasures, and make face paint out of mud. Needless to say, messes are abundant in our household.
While the mud will (hopefully) never touch our rug, I really enjoy knowing that I can easily take care of any messes it will undoubtedly see with minimal effort. There was one single carpet fiber that popped up after washing, but I clipped it with some sharp kitchen scissors, and it was good as new.
Now to wash the dog….
This round ABC rug received instant approval from Jaxson, my 1.5 year old. He started pointing at the letters and smiling to himself as I whipped out my camera. It has made the perfect reading rug for story time.
Natural Dyes – No VOC’s
Lorena Canals has been making quality rugs for 25 years, but has focused primarily on children’s rug for the last 12 years. They have a beautiful collection online to fit any nursery, children’s room, or living room for that matter. These rugs undergo an extensive handmade process, selecting the best raw materials and all natural dyes.
They also contain no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are extremely hazardous to our health. According to the EPA, VOCs cause eye, nose and throat irritation, frequent headaches, nausea, and can also damage the liver, kidney and central nervous system.
Considering how much time our children spend on the carpet/rug playing with toys, they are at the most risk for exposure to VOC’s. Lorena Canals gives us moms a safe, non-toxic, all-natural choice for our child’s nursery or play room.
Comfy Nursery Decor
We’ve since moved the rug into Jaxson’s room to save it from the dogs, and it has quickly grown into his resting place for those essential ‘10 second toddler naps‘.
You know, where they lay their head down, look adorably sweet, and make you believe they are ready for their much-needed nap – only to spring up after 10 seconds and demand more play time?
It might be because it’s made of 100% cotton – and cotton = comfy! It fits in beautifully with our nursery. It ties everything in, and makes for a great playing/reading spot. I love that Jax will be able to grow with this rug for quite some time. I already have some really fun games planned out using this rug and its beautifully hand-woven letters.
All Natural Hand-woven Basket
Lorena Canals also has these natural hand-woven baskets with pompom’s around the brim. We received one with
black pompom’s to match Jaxson’s new rug, but there are a variety of colors to choose from. You can go bold with orange or green, or soft with a more neutral tone.
Jaxson immediately wanted to climb into the basket. Of course. My little adventurer. He recently learned to climb up into his high chair from the floor. He can climb straight up the front of the chair, and stand up in it. Scary stuff, but he is practically 18 months old already! I have to keep a close eye on that boy ;). The basket seems pretty safe to me though, considering it’s a lot closer to the floor than the high chair.
Overall, I would definitely recommend Lorena Canals to any mom out there! Their rugs are fashionable, unique, and above all else – machine washable. I don’t feel this part of Lorena Canals is advertised enough, but all proceeds go to support the Sakula Project, which helps provide schooling for kids in India! Need I say more?
